Final Enactus Evening!!

The time has come, for the final Enactus Wednesday of 2014-2015. An evening full of handover meetings, name labels and a thin cloud of nostalgia.

So what better time to debut our leaver's video, then now?

We have put together a few videos to show our appreciation - we can't wait to hear about all your great accomplishments in the future!!

First up, our fantastic Project Members who continue to higher our standards with every meeting:

Leavers from the Executive Team: (L-R) Bethan Rimmington (legend), Nora Alturki (me!, they got my good side, no?),  Mat Davies (11/10), Elmo (caramel god).

Of course we have also put together as little something for the leavers on the Executive Team, I won't elaborate any further,  otherwise it will get real emotional:

Our MD's <3 : Rosa Tarling and Caroline Turner

And last but not least,  we bid our farewells to the Legendary Caroline Turner. Over her three years at Enactus Sheffield she has not only revolutionised the portfolio but an entire cohort of students at the University of Sheffield. We love you, Caroline. <3

What interested you in Enactus?
The chance to make such a significant difference, and listening to people from Enactus speaking about what we do was incredible, couldn’t turn down the chance to work with such driven and inspirational people.

What do you want to do after your degree?
Go into either HR or the police

Most interesting lecture/information you have learned about your degree so far?
There was a case in the UK in the 1990s where the members of a jury used a Ouija board to come to their decision. Seriously.

If you weren’t studying/doing what you are now, what would you be doing instead?
Being paramedic is my dream job but I am frightened of needles and very clumsy and quite squeamish so I felt like it probably wasn’t going to work out for me in practice.

Literally

Most Favourite Word?
Pacific

Favourite Band and Why?
The Kinks, because 'Waterloo Sunset'

What is something you hope everyone experiences?
Old El Paso enchiladas – if you are reading this, buy them, make them, eat them. Thank me later.

Take every opportunity and make the most of this unique experience

Being able to achieve the most incredible things and the people are just unlike anyone else you could meet at university!

Introducing the next Managing Director: Rosa Tarling

I am ecstatic to be able to introduce you to the next Managing Director of Enactus Sheffield: Rosa Tarling !!
Rosa, a second year English Literature student, joined Enactus during her first year starting out in the New International Research Project that has now become Tapping Potential. By the end of her first year, she was project director!
Rosa lends us her thoughts on what drew her to Enactus:
"I love the atmosphere of Enactus - the 'can-do' attitude that everyone carries, It's fantastic to be around and always drives people further. We do such amazing things and to see the achievements and accomplishments as tangible results is such a rewarding experience. But most of all, I love the people! Everyone's so inspiring and friendly, they are my family

Fun Fact: She has fantastic memory! ask her about any Grey's Anatomy Episode Ever.
"Enactus pushes you out of your comfort zone, but the experience is priceless. Day in and day out, you have the chance to grow and develop, both personally and professionally and its extraordinary. If you have the opportunity, don't let it go. You will do amazing things and meet amazing people! I'm so excited to start the year with such an incredible team"
Congratulations Rosa! We love you!!

Meet the Execs: Jonny Morris

Today we’ve picked the brain of none other than Jonny, the International Project Director. He shares with us his German heritage and the secret dance abilities of the Enactus team.

Blue. Steel.

Name and Course
Jonathan Morris.
Mechanical Engineering.

What interested you in Enactus?
It seemed like a place where things ‘happened’ – my biggest pet peeve about being an undergrad is that your ideas rarely go further than a letter grade, but if you have a good idea at Enactus, there are driven, smart people who will make it happen.

Best Characteristic in a person?
Curiosity. It’s the cause of so many admirable traits and the root of so many essential professions – artists, entrepreneurs, scientists, inventors, writers – curious people change the world.

What wouldn't you wish on any of your enemies?
Comfort. Rest. Validation. Satisfaction.
Don’t be my enemy, yo.

Explain to us your heritage?
My family originates from Germany on my father’s side – in fact during WWI, my great-grandfather took his wife’s surname in marriage (German names not being too popular in Britain at the time). Had that not happened, I’d be Jonny Bernhart, which translates something like ‘Strength/Bravery of a Bear’, I’m told. Shame really.

My Grandfather and Great-Grandfather were both inventors, and have a few patents between them. If you’ve ever been to a theater and put a coin in the slot to use those little opera glasses, you have Edward Ernest Morris to thank!

Best Childhood memory?
To all the Fireman Sam haters out there, YES he is real and YES I have met him.

What is something you hope everyone experiences?
Rejection. No, really! Getting rejected means you’re working at your upper limits, it’s a good thing. You’ll learn more from getting rejected 100 times than from never taking the chance. Don’t settle for less than you can be.

Favourite memory of Enactus so far?
All the dancing. I’m so proud that our projects are world-class, but it’s a little known fact that our dance moves in fact world-leading.

If you could have everyone in the world believe in one thing, what would it be?
That it’s ok to believe different things.

If you weren’t studying/doing what you are now, what would you be doing instead?
I’d love to be a Blacksmith, or anything where you do a lot of work with your hands. I would also leave the country immediately if offered a job at Weta Workshop.

Favourite song to sing in the shower?
“Six Months in a Leaky Boat” by Split Enz

Best advice you have ever received?
I’ve had a lot of advice which boils down to ‘use your time effectively’. What are you doing right now, and how is it driving you forward?

Oh, Morris.

Meet The Execs: Christina Johnson

We are smack-dab in the middle of exam season, so what better way to revise than to procrastinate with a little blogging!

Today, we are meeting our exquisite Grant Director: Christina Johnson!

Between eating copious amounts of sweets in the enterprise zone and talking me into a caffeine detox (like that's ever going to happen!), she is on top of it all and taking names!

Christina Axson Johnson, Business Management and Economics

Favourite memory of enactus so far?
Being announced winners at Nationals!

What interested you in enactus?
The opportunity to help others in a way which I would not be able to otherwise

What do you want to do after your degree?
Work in investment banking or asset management

Any hidden/special talents or hobbies?
Cant think of any special talents :/ but as for hobbies - gym and travelling

Last thing you googled?
I was about to google “how to see the last thing you googled” so according to my internet history it was “Nendo Kenya

Best Characteristic in a person?
Positivity!

How do you see you life going in the next five years?
Finishing university and then working my butt off

Best plan for a lazy Sunday?
I don't really do lazy.. however I would have a lie in till 8am, have a nice breakfast, hit the gym and come home to relax. Watch movies and just remain stationed on the sofa.

Favorite song to sing in the shower?
Hmm.. I don’t actually sing in the shower (I know, weird)

If you werent studying/doing what you are now, what would you be doing instead?
I would be the CEO of an established company or my own and be jet setting around the world.

What is something you hope everyone experiences?
Love and happiness!

Best advice you have ever received?
Not sure about ever but… “Don’t let anyone tell you what you can and cannot do

Song playing in your head right now?
Cheerleader - Omi (Felix Jaehn Remix)

Favorite thing about enactus?
The impact you have on beneficiaries through the projects but also the close friends that you make

To-may-to vs. to-mah-to
To-may-to

Best of 2014!

There is no denying that Enactus sheffield had quite a year, and seeing as we are a full week into the new year, we thought a trip down memory lane is well over-due! So here is our top ten best bits of 2014!

1. Nationals Prep
Which meant a lot of mug washing and practicing vocal projection.

Nationals presenting Legend,  Emily Burgess,  suffering through my vocal coaching.

aw ye.

2. Winning Nationals
Just Yes.
Alumni luminary, Rob Ryan.

3. Casually making soap in the enterprise zone

4. We had our first Summer Internship Ever
Resulting in a Vine account and re-igniting our love for Ice Breakers!

We have THE best Ice Breakers.
Bonus Points for attendees of 'porridge'.
Also, I am sorry.

5. The Fun Run

Tickets to the gun show, sold here.

6. Jonny Morris as the World Cup Presentation Team Coordinator.
Otherwise referred to as Maestro Morris.

It may be worthy to note that Jonny was also our Flag Bearer. See Bullet 10.

7. We had our most interactive Training Day so far!

Big Thank You to Will Churchill for stepping out to take this wonderful photo!

8. World Cup Competition!

#enthusiasm

9. Having the World's most dangerous flag bearer.

just smile and wave. smile and wave.

World Cup was such an experience and I can't help myself - I have to include this beautiful snippet, written by the brilliant Rob Ryan:

" I think my favourite moment of enactus 2014 (and there have been many - from winning nationals to making the leap from member to mentor) has actually got to be the moment we were knocked out at World Cup in the semi-finals. Strange choice I know, but bear with. What made this moment magical was that being one of the final leagues to be announced (if not the last, my memory fails me), our nervousness and anticipation was through the roof. As an alumni who had gained some distance from the team over summer, I was 100% certain their incredible presentation and hours of hard work had made it onto a stage I could only dream of presenting on. Yet despite this, they didn't announce our name. But the reaction was pure Enactus Sheffield and it made me so proud. The lights went down, Coldplay's 'a sky full of stars' came on and the room went into final-round gossip reaction mode. But not Sheffield. Led by James Kirk and Jonny Morris, dancers extraordinaires, Sheffield got up, shook off the looks of disappointment and had a right old boogie. So much so that the Chinese and Americans behind us started to film us. We smiled, we danced and gave each other a big old hug and it was a moment I shall never forget and despite not having been involved in a lot of their efforts over summer, I still felt that enactus connection and connection to Sheffield. Amazing projects, amazing presentation just not their year. An incredible moment nonetheless and my highlight of 2014. "

10. and finally, Caroline Turner, our legendary Managing Director. You have been the best part of this team - you make us what we are!

Thank you to everyone, from members to advisors to alumni to friends and family who have made our year! We can't wait to see whats to come and enjoy the ride with you all!
