The First EVER Enactus Jailbreak Sheffield!

Last weekend, volunteers raised hundreds for Enactus social projects by travelling as far as possible without using any money.

At 9am last Saturday, 20 students at Sheffield University were gearing themselves up for the first EVER Jailbreak Sheffield. The event challenges students to travel as far as possible from Sheffield in 36 hours without any money. Rearing to go armed with banana suits and hula skirts, the jailbreakers set off hoping to journey as far as possible by 9pm on Sunday.

Teams kept us in the loop via GPS tracking system and landed mostly in Europe, while one team managed to get on a plane and travel out to Asia.

Devvrat and Chloe, both doing their masters here the University of Sheffield made it all the way to Singapore and were crowned the overall winners of Jailbreak Sheffield 2014! A fantastic effort made by both of them and setting the bar high for the next set of Jailbreakers.

Another team, freshers Katie and Becky, won the fast-pass and made their way to Rome, Italy where they met the pope and visited the Trevi Fountain. The pair also managed to raise the most money during the event, a whooping £579 between them.

The event raised a total of £2083.51, and all proceeds go to fund our social projects. We want to thank everyone who participated and donated generously to this event, we hope to see you at our next Jailbreak!

Gunge-a-linguist is back!

This afternoon students at Sheffield University gathered to watch one unlucky linguist get covered in 64 litres of bright, smelly, sticky gunge... all the raise money for the Enactus project Blankets 4 Bolivia. This year, one unlucky lecturer was going to get gunged too! Having been standing overnight, the gunge was unbelievably thick, and felt even more slimy than you could ever imagine...

At 1pm a big envelope appeared which was to decide the fate of the linguists.... This years unlucky winner was Jenny Yates, joined by her lecturer Jane Hodson! They looked very unhappy as they were drenched in blue and green gunge.

But it was not over. A collection bucket went round with the aim of raising a further £30 for the Blankets 4 Bolivia, and as a well done to the audience for raising more money, another linguist was chosen to step into the paddling pool! The audience voted (in the second year running) for Rob Ryan and his lecturer Gary Wood...

A big thank you to Munya Chawawa, who presented at the BRIT Awards red carpet this year for hosting the event! Munya skilfully managed to avoid getting gunge on his leopard print gilet.

We're very pleased to announce that this year the total raised was well over £600!

The Intern: FINAL!

Fancie are a local cupcake firm, known for baking beautiful and delicious premium cakes. Enter The Intern teams.

The task part 1: A simple buy, market and sell task: design your own cupcakes, place the desired order, and then market the cupcakes to generate as much profit as possible through sales.

The task part 2: The teams were to present a marketing strategy for Fancie, (based on what they did during the task, and what they would do in the future) to a panel of Judges.

The panel of judges consisted of Rich and Jamie, important representatives from Enterprise Rent A Car. The final judge was Dan (seen here on the left) who has previously been part of, and ran The Intern competition before graduating and starting a job with HSBC.

Team Mappin were first to present to the judges, comparing the parts of a cupcake to the parts of a marketing strategy. They had some very creative ideas for the future, including the development of organic, vegan and low sugar cupcakes. The judges particular liked the idea of the Fancie Van, which would go round offices and parks delivering and selling cupcakes. Despite the presentation being a little long, the team had a very approachable style of presenting and did well in the question and answer session.

Team Goodwin had created a feel good YouTube and radio advert, and despite technical hitches, delivered a visually effective presentation. Being cost aware, they acknowledged that the price of a Fancie cupcake could be too expensive for students, so considered how they could get around this, and other target markets they could approach. One thing that definitely grabbed my attention was the suggestion of a Varsity cupcake bake-off!

Team Elmfield impressed us with their slick, well practised pitch. They had carefully considered using a SWOT analysis, before talking about targeting a market that no one else had thought of; schools. Carefully considering this target market, they explained how in the future they would place advertisements in buses as thats where it would be seen by the school children. All team members answered their questions very professionally.

Team Hicks delivered a confident and enthusiastic presentation; surprising judges with their presentation skills. The group had clearly done their research on preferred cupcake flavours, and even partnered up with an organisation to sell 100 cupcakes in bulk to an event. Everyone was impressed with the links they had had set up with Tiny Tiny Entertainment, and enjoyed hearing about the personal touches they had added by using thank you cards. Despite not knowing exact cost figures when questioned by judges, it was the way team Hicks had triumphed over the problems they had faced... that meant they won the final round of the competition!

This years Intern has been bigger and better than ever, with some fantastic ideas coming to light, and a spectrum of incredibly strong individuals. A massive congratulations to Team Hicks, and everyone who has competed. Now the final is over, the 8 strongest individuals have been selected to attend the Centrica and Enterprise Rent A Car assessment centres on Tuesday. Two of them will win the internship of their dreams!

Until next year, thank you and goodbye from The Intern!
